Facilities

St John’s combines historic character with modern facilities that support every aspect of College life. From our riverside gardens to our modern Learning Resource Centre, each space helps our community study, perform, and thrive together.

Library and Learning Resource Centre

Our modern Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and Library are regularly cited by students as one of the reasons they chose John’s. Open 24/7 during term, the LRC offers quiet study areas, group work rooms and social learning spaces, alongside a two-storey library at the heart of the building.

Gym

Next to Cruddas House, the College gym offers rowing machines, treadmills, cross-trainers, and a dedicated weights room. Membership currently costs £40 per year for current students.

Our Chapel

The 12th-century Chapel of St Mary-the-Less is a place of prayer, music and reflection at the heart of College life, home to weekly services, the Chapel Choir, and moments of community throughout the year. The Chapel is open daily to students and staff and also provides a distinctive setting for concerts, talks and College events.

Music practice rooms

Located in the Parsonage beside the Chapel and LRC, our two music practice rooms are fully equipped with Steinway pianos, drums, and amplification for instrumental and vocal rehearsals. Larger instruments, including a Boston grand piano in Leech Hall, are also available for students to book.

John's Bar

Run by Johnians for Johnians, the College bar is a favourite gathering place in the cellars of College, famous for its friendly atmosphere and great value.

Our location

St John’s is located on Durham’s historic Bailey, just moments from Durham Cathedral and a short walk from the Market Place and University facilities. Our gardens lead down to the River Wear, offering green space and views across the peninsula in the heart of the city.

Parking and travel

Because of our central location on Durham’s historic peninsula, on-site parking at St John’s is very limited. Students who require parking should apply for a permit through Durham University’s Estates & Facilities Directorate.

Parking across the University is limited overall, and sustainable travel is encouraged.

Secure bike stands are available for students living both in and out of College.
