New international students

We’re delighted to welcome students from all over the world to St John’s — your home away from home in Durham.

A home away from home

Every year, St John’s welcomes students from across the globe who enrich our community with their experiences and perspectives. Whether you’re arriving in the UK for the first time or returning to study, our team will help you settle in and feel at home.

From the moment you arrive, our volunteers and staff are here to guide you through every step. You’ll join a small, close-knit College where people quickly get to know one another, and where kindness and curiosity are part of daily life.

Despite being an ocean away from my hometown, John’s quickly became my home away from home. I truly can’t imagine my university experience anywhere else.

Arrivals, induction and settling in

From your first day in Durham, we will help you settle into life at John’s and the wider University.

International arrivals begin before the main start of term, giving students time to move in, explore Durham and adjust before Welcome Week begins. During these days, you’ll meet other new students, take part in student led events and orientation activities, and enjoy a Postgraduate & International Student Formal.

You will see all events available on your personal induction week planner.

Support and community

You will quickly become part of a close and welcoming community.

Our Student Support team, Resident Tutors and student Common Rooms work closely together to help students feel known, supported and connected throughout their time at John’s. Alongside practical support and wellbeing guidance, there are many opportunities to build friendships through social events, formals, sports, music, volunteering and student societies. Many international students also value the smaller size of the College community and the opportunity to get to know people quickly.
