Make a difference

Every gift to St John’s helps sustain and strengthen the life of our College: from supporting students and scholarships to preserving our historic buildings and advancing learning and research. Whether you give a one-off donation, a regular gift, or choose to support a specific cause close to your heart, your generosity helps future generations of Johnians to flourish.

Find a cause you’re passionate about

One of the most effective ways to support St John’s is through an unrestricted donation, allowing the College to direct funds where they are most needed. We also gratefully welcome gifts to specific areas of College life and future development.

Support the student experience

St John’s offers a distinctive, student-led community with thriving sports, societies, and performing arts. You can make a difference by supporting a particular cause, event, or club: from the Boat Club to the Bailey Theatre Company, John’s Music Society, or any activity that shaped your own time here.

Student Opportunities & Hardship Fun

This fund, made possible through alumni and friends, enriches the student experience by providing bursaries and small grants for extra-curricular activities and hardship support. These awards enable Johnians to take part fully in all aspects of College and University life.

Accommodation scholarships

Living in College helps students feel at home and part of the John’s community. Yet financial pressures mean some students cannot afford to do so. Our goal is to offer a suite of scholarships covering part of accommodation costs for students from first-generation, low-income, and ethnic minority backgrounds. The David Wilkinson First Generation Scholars Fund, launched in 2023, is a first step towards this aim.

Fostering Christian teaching, learning, and research

Since 1909, St John’s has been a place of worship, learning, and leadership. Today, we continue to serve the wider Church and world through transformational teaching, formation, and research, remaining true to our generous Christian foundation while engaging with contemporary challenges.

Preserving and improving our historic estate

We are committed to caring for our Bailey buildings for future generations — enhancing accessibility, sustainability, and student experience as part of a new capital project now in planning.

Sharing our heritage with the wider community

From the 12th-century Chapel to the Georgian townhouses of the Bowes family, our buildings carry a remarkable story. As custodians of this heritage, we seek to open our doors to the wider Durham community while sustaining the vibrant life of the College today.
