Make a gift in your will

Legacies, large or small, are vital to the future of St John’s, enabling us to be an independent recognised College within Durham University – a gift that can make a profound difference to transforming lives for good.

Legacy gifts can help practically in many ways, such as providing much needed student scholarships, supporting the estate, including new capital projects, and building up the College’s resilience for the future.

It helps us to know your wishes for any gift you intend to give – if you are considering naming St John’s in your will, or have already done so, we would be very pleased to be in touch. The best way to support St John’s is to make an unrestricted gift, which gives St John’s the freedom to allocate your gift to the area of highest need.  Of course, we welcome any expression of wishes you might make which could direct your gift to a specific area and projects, you can find more on our “Make a difference” page.

A legacy to St John’s College should refer to the College by its full official title.

Making a will is a time for reflection about your personal legacy and an opportunity to make a lasting impact. Including a gift to St John’s in your will is a powerful investment in the next generation of students, in tomorrow’s leaders formed by the community and values of St John’s.

Our Story

St John’s College is incredibly special to us. It’s where we met, made some of our best friends, lived in such a quirky historical building in a most beautiful city and experienced life in a way we never had before. College is an integral part of our relationship and we had such an amazing time there. It is 46 years since we graduated and we just love keeping in touch with what is going on and visiting whenever we can.

Our children know how special college is to us and understand why we want to leave a legacy to St John’s, to enable future students to have the experience that shaped us. They have had to listen to our stories when they were growing up like how in our final year we both managed to get the riverside rooms in 28 North Bailey; Richard on the ground floor, Anne on the first and her Moral Tutor, Christina Baxter, was above. Amazingly, she never seemed to mind us tapping on the pipes to say good night or good morning to each other.
