Students

living out

Whether you live in College or elsewhere in Durham, you are fully part of the St John’s community. We invite all ‘livers out’ to see John’s as your second home — a place to study, relax, and stay connected throughout your time at Durham.

You’re always welcome to drop by to use the Learning Resource Centre, grab a coffee in College between lectures, or join in community events and formals.

College key access

All College buildings (except the Learning Resource Centre and Library) require a key for access.
Livers out can sign out a general Assa key for the academic year at Reception (bring your campus card). A £50 deposit is required, refunded when the key is returned.

Meals in College

The Haughton Dining Room is at the heart of College life — a place to connect over shared meals. Livers out are welcome to join for discounted meals during term time at the members-only rate.

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available on weekdays, with brunch at weekends.
  • Pay on the day at Reception by card (subject to availability).

Local students

If you’re a new undergraduate living locally, you’ll be invited to stay in College for part of Welcome Week at a discounted rate. This gives you the chance to take part in all fresher activities and meet your peers without worrying about travel home late at night.

We’ll contact eligible students directly with more information.

It’s great knowing I can always come to John’s, even when I’m living elsewhere in the city, whether it’s to see friends in the bar, go to one of the many events, or get support. In exam season the LRC became my second home with the coffee machine in College nearby!
