Costs and scholarships
An independent college
An independent college
St John’s is a recognised College of Durham University, but we are financially and administratively independent. This means we manage our own estate, staffing, and student life, including accommodation pricing and College-based awards, while our students benefit fully from Durham University’s teaching, facilities, and degree programmes.
We offer a range of College-based scholarships and bursaries at St John’s. These awards recognise potential, support access, and help students make the most of every opportunity.
These awards promote widening participation by supporting new undergraduates from lower-income or under-represented backgrounds with part of their College accommodation costs in their first year.
Provides small grants (typically £100–£250) to enable participation in travel, education, research, outreach, and College projects.
A £1,000 award to support a new postgraduate student who has partial, but not full, funding from other sources.
A one-off £250 grant to help Law students meet the cost of essential textbooks, established by alumnus and SCR President Richard Roberts.
Offers grants and loans (typically £100–£400) to Cranmer Ordinands experiencing financial hardship.
Supports Christian overseas relief projects undertaken by members of St John’s College.

Presenting my new research at this conference gave me immediate feedback and real happiness – a rare gift in the often long and solitary cycle of writing and publishing. I’m deeply grateful to the St John’s Opportunities Fund for making it possible.
