James (Jimmy) Dunn (1939 – 2020)
Professor James (Jimmy) Dunn was a distinguished New Testament scholar, former Lightfoot Professor of Divinity at Durham University, and a longstanding friend of St John’s College and the Wesley Study Centre. During his years in Durham, from 1980 until his retirement to Chichester, he was a familiar and much-valued presence within the academic and communal life of the College and its SCR.
Professor Dunn’s scholarship shaped the field of New Testament studies internationally, particularly through his work on Paul, Christology and the Holy Spirit. He was one of those rare scholars whose work not only influenced debate but helped define it for generations of students and researchers.
Before his death in 2020, Professor Dunn arranged for much of his personal library to come to St John’s. In 2021, more than 3,000 volumes from his collection were transferred to the College Library, where they continue to support theological study and research within the Learning Resource Centre. The gift reflected both his generosity and his longstanding connection to the life of the College. You can read more about Professor Dunn’s donation to the library in the John’s Chronicle.
We remember Professor Dunn with gratitude for his scholarship, friendship and contribution to the intellectual and spiritual life of St John’s.
